Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a prescription injection best known for diminishing lines and wrinkles on your face. It’s one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments in the country.

Botox is FDA approved to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

In addition to lines and wrinkles, Botox injections are used to treat various medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (severe sweating) and chronic migraine headaches.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily stopping the muscle movement under your skin that creates lines and creases.

As you get older, your skin’s production of collagen decreases. Collagen is a structural protein that helps keep your skin strong and resilient. The subcutaneous fat under your skin also diminishes as you get older, which contributes to sagging.

Without the protective layer of fat, when you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows in surprise, the muscles that create facial expressions work closer to the surface of your skin, resulting in grooves and creases.

Because your skin is thinner and less resilient, it can’t bounce back as easily, which leads to lines and wrinkles.

With Botox, the muscles no longer cause your skin to fold and the lines and creases smooth out, creating a more youthful look.

What can I expect during Botox injections?

Pleasanton Allergy and Dermatology develops individualized Botox treatment plans based on your aesthetic needs and goals. They review the details of your injections at your consultation so you know what to expect.

Botox injections generally take only a few minutes to administer. Though you may feel a slight pinch during your injection, the pain is fleeting.

After your Botox injections, you can resume your usual activities and even cover up any of the red marks left by the needles with makeup.

Pleasanton Allergy and Dermatology recommends you not engage in any strenuous physical activity for at least two hours following your session.

How long does Botox last?

Botox injections only temporarily keep the lines and wrinkles away but may last up to four months. As soon as you notice a return of your wrinkles, Pleasanton Allergy and Dermatology suggests you schedule your next Botox appointment to repeat the injections.

Regular Botox injections may help prolong the youth-enhancing benefits and prevent new wrinkles from forming.
